*2016 Lenten Study: Standing Naked Before God
This year’s Lenten study examines something we’re all familiar with at Wellington: Public confession, which we do every Sunday in our worship service. Using the book Standing Naked Before God: The Art of Public Confession by Molly Phinney Baskette, this study will explore the spiritual and communal art of public confession, a practice that helped the author’s church to grow from a church of 50 members to a community of 300.
Baskette writes that confession is not about “making it all about us,” but instead is about giving our stories away to our community and, in doing so, discovering that our sins aren’t just our own secret shames but a shared wound on the body of Christ that is healed through the empathy and grace. Because confessions often deal so much with shame, Wellington member Yuki Schwartz will share her doctoral dissertation research on shame, shaming practices and empathy, and learn with participants how to incorporate new understandings about shame, sin and empathy can transform our confessions and our church.
The Lenten study will be held every Wednesday night for five weeks, beginning on Feb. 17, in the fellowship hall downstairs. Study sessions will begin at 6 p.m. with a light meal, compliments of the Wellington Congregational Life Committee, with study beginning at 6:30 p.m. and lasting until about 8 p.m.
Books will be available in the church office for $15.00. Scholarships are available. Please see Pastor Alli if you have any questions.
