Wellington Avenue UCC is in the process of creating a host site for the Young Adult Service Communities (YASC) program, a ministry of the United Church of Christ, with the goal of raising up new leaders in the work of faith and justice, and birthing community transformation for Lakeview, Chicago and the world.
In Wellington’s YASC program, young adults ages 21-35 will come to Chicago to work with various justice-based organizations, and live in intentional community at housing that the church will provide. YASC participants will spend 11 months working and learning about how to organize, advocate and collaborate for justice. They will also spend time together engaging in spiritual reflection to make the connections between their justice work and their faith and religious practices. YASC participants also embed themselves in the host church through church service work, such as leading worship or teaching art, or in whatever way they can best share their gifts and passions with the church community. Church members also serve as mentors to YASC participants, learning with them and from them, as well as sharing their own knowledge and wisdom.
Other YASC sites in the U.S. are hosted at churches in or near Seattle, Philadelphia, Boston, San Diego, Washington D.C, and many other cites. Young adults who have participated in past programs report that the work and study in the program helped transform their lives and move them toward a greater understanding and commitment to justice, as former participant Jenn describes in the video below:
Come join us on this journey to live out God’s call to do justice in our world with the leaders of today and tomorrow!
If you want to apply for the program or know of a young person who is interested in learning more about faith and justice, apply for the next YASC cohort by filling out the online application.
