Thank you to the 23 people who participated in our “What’s the Buzz” listening session on Saturday morning! It was a rich time of sharing in community – a true testament to the ❤️ of Wellington.

We will continue to share information in preparation for the Congregational Meeting on January 26th. CLICK HERE for the info sheets that were previously distributed – they’ve been updated with information received this past week about storage, exterior signage, and some feedback from the survey.

Call for action from WUCC’s Immigrant Justice Task Force

Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance is threatened. Alders Ray Lopez and Silvana Tabares proposed an amendment to the City ordinance that would weaken our city’s Sanctuary status, and violate the Illinois TRUST Act by removing due process. It’s expected to be voted on this Wednesday. Here’s are actions you can take:

Monday, January 13

  • If you live in Chicago, please call your alderperson and ask them to vote no on this amendment on Wednesday. If you’re not in Chicago, please share this information with any Chicagoans you know. Be on the alert for similar ordinances where you live.
  • Join immigrant and human rights organizations and many others, for a press conference on Monday, January 13th at 11 am at City Hall, 121 N Lasalle, to demand NO votes for this ordinance that would put all communities at risk.

Wednesday, January 15

  • Attend the City Council meeting (121 N LaSalle), when the ordinance will be voted on.  Meetings typically start at 10 am. Arrive early to get in line.
  • Written: Email your written comments, not to exceed a maximum of two pages to public_comments@cityofchicago.org. Written comments will be accepted from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM on the day of the scheduled meeting
  • If you are unable to attend the meeting, watch it via the City Clerk’s website

Wellington has already signed on to a statement pledging our support for Chicago to remain a Sanctuary city. If you want more information on the history of this movement in Chicago, Craig Mousin shares this summary citation of an article he wrote:
