Holding Onto Emmanuel

Bringing God into a broken world is not easy. For so long, many of our churches, especially those in the West, preach that God is neutral. But the oppressed know that God’s love is alive in the world. God is with us, teaching us how to be radically present in this world by feeding the hungry, healing the sick, consoling the grieving, and advocating for those who are overlooked. Jesus shows us how to transform faith into acts of liberating love.
In the face of overwhelming violence and despair, we proclaim that the birth of Jesus Christ is good news for the oppressed and the poor. God’s incarnation reminds us that human life is precious and that God’s love and solidarity is radical and transformative.
This Christmas is especially special to us because after over two years of unprecedented suffering and despair, the tree is lit up in Bethlehem. Christians in the Holy Land are reminding the world that we are still here, and that as long as we are present in this land, there is still hope. May this Christmas, and every Christmas, be a time where we welcome the incarnation of Love in our midst, so that we may be revolutionary embodiments of God’s hope in every place that is yearning for justice.
Lord in your mercy…hear our prayer.

Close out the year by catching up with friends far & near!
If you’ve been missing Pat & Ray, this is often a good place to catch them. You can also congratulate Dave Safeblade, your faithful host, on his recent retirement!
Since the Last Supper of 2025 falls on New Year’s Eve, Congregational Life is doing something new!
The last Last Supper of the year will be an overnight retreat at the Lodge at Tower Hill!
There are two single spots still available, so if you’d like to get away for the day – and ring in the new year with a great bunch of folks – let Claudette know!

Book Club
Saturday, January 17th at 10am
We will discuss Pat Conroy’s extraordinary memoir based on his experience as one of two teachers in a two-room schoolhouse, working with children the world had pretty much forgotten. It was a year that changed his life, and one that introduced a group of poor Black children to a world they did not know existed.
Invite a friend to join us!

TAKE ACTION TO SUPPORT TITA REBECCA!
You may recall hearing Rubi talk about Tita Rebecca during her November “Report from the Field.” Rebecca is a 71-year-old Filipina who is in detention at Clark County Detention Center in Indiana. She is scheduled for a deportation flight on Jan 2nd, but she has still not received a medical exam or a letter of endorsement from the Philippine Consulate. Based off of medical testimony, there are serious concerns that she is not medically fit to fly and needs to have medical care before a long and potentially life threatening flight. Click HERE for the call script, and let the Consulate know we care!

CPT Delegation to the Borderlands
Kryss Chupp and Tracy Hughes will co-lead a CPT Delegation to the U.S./Mexico Borderlands in Arizona/Sonora February 21-March 3. Information is available on CPT’s website. If you or someone you know is interested, please apply by January 15.
