There’s been enough bad news this week to last us for a while – so we’re leading with some GOOD NEWS instead!

Dearest Wellington community,

This is a belated note, but I just wanted to express so much gratitude for all the love and support you have shown Olivia and me as we welcomed baby Mia into the world.  From the sweet baby shower at the picnic by the lake, to the generous gift card, to the individual gifts and visits and food and caring messages.  It’s been incredible to be so surrounded by love during her first few months of life.

And it’s a challenging time because the crises of climate disaster, white supremacy, xenophobia and militarism continue to escalate and compound.  We’ve been able to focus on our little one when so many cannot, in large part because of the actions of our violent federal government which is about to get even more violent.

But lookout.  We’re parents now, and that just means we have exponentially more fight in us to build the world we want Mia to inherit.

Mia turned 11 weeks old this week, is getting great at eye contact and smiles, lets us sleep for a 6-7 hour stretch most nights, and seems endlessly curious about everything around her.  She also absolutely loves when I play the piano for her and music of all kinds.

Can’t wait for more of you to meet her in the coming weeks and months!  Thank you again for all the love and support.

Debbie

Wedding bells will ring for
Dave Ullrich & Jill Harkema
on Memorial Day Weekend 2025!

Their very small wedding, with just family present, will take place in Newaygo, Michigan, at the home of George & Susan Heartwell on the Muskegon River.

They plan to have a reception in Chicago sometime in June, and we can’t wait to celebrate with them then! ❤️

Given the outcome of last week’s election, we are called upon to keep raising our voices and working together to build the communities we need and deserve – regardless of who inhabits the White House.

Keep an eye on this spot every week for simple ways to speak up for justice!

The House previously passed a bill (H.R. 6408) that could give any president unprecedented power to target and shut down nonprofits and activist student groups. The legislation was intended to strip the tax-exempt status of organizations advocating for Palestinian human rights. The Senate refused to take it up after tens of thousands of our members sent letters to Congress urging opposition.

But now, House Members are attempting to pass a different bill (H.R. 9495) that includes the legislative language of H.R. 6408, which would be disastrous for all of our organizations working towards a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and an end to the occupation.

Come celebrate with long-time Wellington partner, North Side Housing & Supportive Services, as they reveal the new men’s shelter in Rogers Park that’s about to open!

Our involvement in this project included funds from the Outreach budget, Board leadership from Dick Simpson & Pastor Ann-Louise, and organizing support to overcome resistance from neighbors and receive a special use permit from the city’s Zoning Board.

There is much to celebrate – and the space is beautiful!
Hope to see you there.

You might really need to join Book Club this month!

Meeting next on Zoom
Saturday, Nov. 16th
at 10 am

to discuss Dr. Lakshmin’s

Real Self-Care:
a transformative program for redefining wellness (crystals, cleanses, and bubble baths not included)

Music 4 the Soul

This adapted version reflects our longing,
that compassion and peace may prevail for all.
How Beautiful Our Spacious Skies

The tune, “Materna,” was written by a former organist of Grace Episcopal Church, Newark, Samuel Ward in 1882, originally for a hymn called O Mother dear, Jerusalem.

These words are an adaptation by Miriam Therese Winters in
The New Century Hymnal.

How Beautiful Our Spacious Skies
Recorded March 17, 2020 by Krista Donough and Chris Henke.
