The Negro Spiritual Royalties’

Since 2022, Wellington UCC has been paying royalties each time we sing a Negro Spiritual in a service, honoring the musical legacy of enslaved African Americans. Unlike other hymns and worship music, Negro Spirituals were not published until after the names of their creators were long forgotten, if they were ever known to begin with. They are both a witness to the horrors of slavery and racism, and to a merciful, faithful, and just Christianity that we still aspire to today. As an art form, Negro Spirituals are the unacknowledged intellectual property of enslaved Africans in America.

Each of our offerings supports the development of young Black & Brown Chicago-area musicians through The People’s Music School Greater South Side program (GSS).  Founded in 2016 at Gary Comer Youth Center, the GSS program has grown from a 15-student band program to a 180-student, fully orchestrated force for positive youth development on Chicago’s South Side. 94% of their seniors go on to attend college, including minority-serving institutions, when only 65% of CPS students do the same.

This legacy of breathtakingly beautiful music soothes, inspires, breaks down walls, protests indignities, preaches the gospel, shows us how to pray, and leads us down the righteous path towards racial justice and healing.

As of May 31, 2025, The People’s Music School’s National Endowment for the Arts award has been terminated by the federal government.

Wellington is a small part of many funders stepping up to fill the void.  Please give to Wellington’s ongoing support of Negro Spiritual Reparations by supporting The People’s Music School’s Greater South Side Program.  In these days of growing cruelty, we can make a difference in hard hit communities.

Part one of our book discussion is THIS SATURDAY! All are welcome – even if you haven’t done the reading. Bring a friend!

🌈 Sunday, June 29th is PRIDE
As is our tradition, we will be marching in the parade as part of the Chicago Coalition of Welcoming Churches.

Are you willing to help carry our sign, as Shelby so capably demonstrates in this picture?

Want to be part of the fun, and let queer people know God loves them, no matter what?!?

Let Pastor Ann-Louise know ASAP!

We had so much fun writing and sharing our obituaries last month – and realized that we have song requests, too, for our final farewell!

What do YOU want played at your funeral (or celebratory repast)?
It can be a favorite hymn or a Motown classic – or anything in between! Email it to Pastor Ann-Louise and she’ll add it to our community playlist!

 An update from ONE Northside:
Thanks to those who weighed in on the proposed upzoning on Broadway in Uptown and Edgewater.  After a thorough process, members voted to endorse the upzoning proposal because it will increase the affordable housing stock through a retroactive trigger of the Affordable Requirements Ordinance (ARO) which obligates developers to include affordability in their plans for developments, lasting a minimum of 30 years.

An update from IL Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights:

ICIRR supported logistics for the visit of four members of Congress to the Broadview ICE Processing Facility.  The Congresspeople were denied entrance even though the law states that they have the right to conduct oversight visits.  Wellington was present with 30 other member organizations to support the legislators’ press conference denouncing the lack of transparency and accountability. It even made the New York Times – click HERE to read the article.
