On a related note, on August 12-15, 2023, people being released from Cook County Jail reported no access to running water as jail temperatures stayed hot. People said they were offered one bottle of water over a 24-hour period and saw others passing out from the heat and dehydration. Toilets weren’t flushing, and people were taking off their shirts to cool down. On Wednesday, August 16 water appeared to be running but is gray and smells and tastes terrible. One person said that a C.O. told him not to drink the water coming out of the faucet.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION TODAY!

Email and Call Cook County Commissioner Josina Morita (josina.morita@cookcountyil.gov / 312-603-6383) and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO.ccspd@ccsheriff.org / 312-603-6444) with the following script:

“Hello, my name is ________________. I am a Cook County resident concerned about conditions at the Cook County Jail. From August 12-15, Cook County Jail denied access to clean running water, and as of August 16, incarcerated individuals report that the water has remained unclean. I demand that my incarcerated neighbors in Cook County Jail Division 5 are provided clean water as is required by the UN Human Rights Minimum Standard for the treatment of prisoners.”

Over the past three years, the Sanctuary Working Group,
now a program of Wellington, has offered accompaniment support to over 260 asylum seekers – both families & individuals – from mainly Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Utilizing their cooperative, grassroots network of representatives from over 41 organizations, they work to meet emergency needs – such as food, clothing, housing – and also provide referrals to case management, medical and dental care, and legal support.

A grant is currently being submitted to the MacArthur Foundation to help grow their work – but they still need individual donors to help meet the many needs that are presented to them every week!

Please give generously to support their work. 100% of all gifts go directly to recently arrived asylum seekers.

You can give online here – just be sure to click on the “TO” drop-down menu and choose “Sanctuary Working Group Emergency Fund.”

If you are able to cover the bank processing fees, please click the box in the bottom left-hand corner that says “Cover fees.”

You can also mail a check to:

Wellington UCC, P.O. Box 804687, Chicago, IL 60680-4108

Please note: SWG – EF on the memo line.

Feel free to share this request with anyone you know who expresses concern for the arriving asylum seekers in Chicago!
