We had a lovely time celebrating the life of Bruce Beasley this past Sunday. If you were unable to join us, you can find the recording of the service here. The passcode is: Nbxy&6@q

We also enjoyed a sumtuous feast from the Middle East Bakery & Grill! The leftovers contributed to a “loaves & fishes” moment the next day at the Rogers Park Love Fridge – look what a difference our sharing made! (Also, it was all gone by the end of the day!)

Thanks to Meg Evans for organizing this new Outreach activity!
We had our debut on Friday, August 4th, blessed by great weather & fantastic turn out. Not many people were released from jail during our 3 hour shift, but everyone we made contact with was super appreciative.

We’ll be back again on September 8th!
Reach out to Meg (217-553-2995) if you’d like to get involved.

UNICEF has helped save millions of children’s lives and advocate for their rights in over 190 countries around the world. Today, the risks facing children are even greater than ever before.

To continue reaching the children who need support the most, UNICEF depends on voluntary funding from individual supporters, the private sector and governments. As our leaders are determining how much to allocate towards UNICEF’s lifesaving programs, U.S. Government funding makes a critical difference for children at this important juncture.

The U.S. Government’s support for UNICEF is essential for children to stay safe and healthy in the world’s most severe conflicts. That’s why it’s important to call on Congress to make an historic investment in protecting the world’s children. Act now!

Upcoming Events

This month, the Book Club is reading & discussing
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

Join us on Zoom
at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 19th
for a lively conversaion!

Questions? Click here to reach out to Claudette Richards.

We are more than halfway through the year, so if you haven’t been to the Last Supper Club yet, you should sign up for one NOW!

Here’s how it works: Pastor Ann-Louise cooks, you show up to eat.
In addition to a great meal, you get to enjoy good conversation &
a connection that goes a little deeper than Fellowship Hour.

Some people enjoy it so much, they’ve attended more than once!

Come by yourself…or bring your spouse who’s not a church-goer!
(Surely they believe in eating!)

Ask a friend who’s never been to Wellington to come,
or reach out to someone you haven’t seen in church for a while, and ask if they’d like to come with you.

Over the past three years, the Sanctuary Working Group,
now a program of Wellington, has offered accompaniment support to over 260 asylum seekers – both families & individuals – from mainly Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Utilizing their cooperative, grassroots network of representatives from over 41 organizations, they work to meet emergency needs – such as food, clothing, housing – and also provide referrals to case management, medical and dental care, and legal support.

A grant is currently being submitted to the MacArthur Foundation to help grow their work – but they still need individual donors to help meet the many needs that are presented to them every week!

Please give generously to support their work. 100% of all gifts go directly to recently arrived asylum seekers.

You can give online here – just be sure to click on the “TO” drop-down menu and choose “Sanctuary Working Group Emergency Fund.”

If you are able to cover the bank processing fees, please click the box in the bottom left-hand corner that says “Cover fees.”

You can also mail a check to:

Wellington UCC, P.O. Box 804687, Chicago, IL 60680-4108

Please note: SWG – EF on the memo line.

Feel free to share this request with anyone you know who expresses concern for the arriving asylum seekers in Chicago!
