see you at 10:30am

ONLINE

for a digital worship service!

Israel’s attacks in South Lebanon continue, with horrific consequences for civilians and residents of the area. Last week, Israeli strikes in one day killed 11 people. The strikes were among the deadliest in the weeks since Lebanon agreed to a U.S.-mediated peace framework with Israel. The deal leaves Israeli troops inside occupied southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is disarmed and the Lebanese army takes control.

God of the oppressed, we know that the earth is full of your steadfast love. Yet, as we witness injustice and death in South Lebanon and beyond, we feel only the despair of the Psalmist, asking: “Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?” (Psalm 44:24) Remind us that we walk by faith and not by sight, and help us bring your presence to the oppressed through our own witness. We pray for an end to violence in our region.

God in your mercy…hear our prayer.

Well…exciting for your pastor, at least!
Ann-Louise is away for three weeks and will return to the pulpit on August 30th. While she’s away, enjoy some excellent guest preachers (see below) and this lovely poem/picture combo.

DONATE YOUR BOOKS!
We will be holding a book drive from now until our Oktoberfest event.  Feel free to bring your donations to the church the next time you’re here for service! Andrew will leave a box in the entryway for you to drop them off.

An update from IJTF:
WUCC welcomed the Vargas family from El Salvador into public sanctuary Aug 9, 1982, with these words: “We offer you sanctuary amidst the wilderness to you who have traveled so far and suffered so much. To the best of our ability, we will protect you and God will protect us all.”

Our immigrant justice journey is a blessing. Over time, we evolved to meet each current moment, including today’s harsh, anti-immigrant tactics and policies wreaking fear, havoc and harm on directly impacted families and immigrant justice advocates.

With gratitude, we lift up our beloved immigrant siblings who entrusted/entrust us with their lives and sacred stories, church leaders and faithful community members who built a firm foundation for our work, and all those known and unknown to us who continue to show up, speak up, and give time, talents, treasure, and prayers along the way. Amen.

Book Club meets tomorrow morning! Join us Saturday at 10am for a discussion of Kristin Hannah’s The Women.

Also! We have decided to make a change to our book selection for September. We would like to postpone discussion of Daisy Hernández’s Citizenship: Notes on An American Myth in the hopes of hosting the author at a future meeting! In the meantime, we have decided to read Counting Backwards by Binnie Kirshenbaum:

“There but Not There: A Husband’s Dementia Leaves His Wife Reeling – In the novel Counting Backwards, by Binnie Kirshenbaum, an artist grieves the loss of her husband to Lewy body disease (a form of dementia).”

If Daisy can join us in October, we will discuss Citizenship then. Stay tuned!
