On February 15, after over three years of harassment and abuse from Israeli authorities since he was 16 years old, Shadi Khoury (Sabeel co-founder Samia Khoury’s grandson) was sentenced to 32 months in prison and a fine equivalent to $3,836  His family then submitted an appeal against the conviction and sentence, along with a request to freeze the order for Shadi to report to prison…and his case continues. The hearing will now be held on Monday, May 11th at 9 AM Jerusalem time. While Shadi was able to spend Easter with his family, the postponements continue to keep him in the limbo he has faced across more than 40 court hearings. His family continues to hold onto hope and is grateful for everyone who has supported them during this difficult time.

God of Justice, we pray for Shadi and his family as they endure the injustice of the Israeli court system. We pray for justice, healing, and freedom for the thousands of other young Palestinians suffering under military occupation and apartheid. Lord, embolden us to dismantle all structures of dehumanization and build a world of dignity and peace in their place.

God in your mercy…hear our prayer.

INVITATION TO A HALF DAY RETREAT

Saturday, May 30
10am – 2pm

How do we cope with the fact that life is always changing – whether we’re 30 or 80?

Join us for half a day of ritual activities and individual reflection on ways to adapt to change, let go of who we were, embrace who we are, and appreciate our unique life chapters.

This retreat is being led by Pastor Ann-Louise, with support from Congregational Life. Invite a friend!

Spring has sprung and it’s been a busy few weeks for the Wellington community! We’ve planted trees at the New Horizons community garden, gathered for a Last Supper hosted by Colleen Harper, protested in the streets on May Day, celebrated the opening of Timeline Theatre’s new space, and enjoyed dinner before the show at Sun Wah BBQ.

Join us on Saturday, May 16th at 2pm for the 5th Annual Palestinian Flag Raising Ceremony.

Commemorating 78 years since the Nakba, we will honor those we’ve lost in Gaza and the West Bank and recognize the ongoing struggle against Israeli occupation and aggression. The Mennonite Action Chicago Purge Palantir vigil has been welcomed to join alongside American Muslims for Palestine.

We need some people to help hold banners, photos and children’s clotheslines.  Please contact Chris Inserra if you can volunteer!

Pastor Ann-Louise has registered for this free event on Wednesday, May 20th and would love some company!

Throughout the day, you can expect:

  • Live music and a spirit-filled opening
  • A powerful keynote on Healing Justice
  • Expert presentations on trauma, mental health, and community healing
  • Somatic healing, expressive arts, and African drumming
  • Breakout sessions on organizing, the church’s response to gun violence, reentry and mental health, and self-care for healers
  • Lunch provided

If you can’t stay the whole day, consider joining for part of it!
